Planning the storyboard for my Pentel commercial

First Scene: This will be the shot comparing other pens to Pentel pens. It will give the audience an idea of the kinds of things you can do with Pentel pens and why they're so much better. It will be a zoom shot. As the actor continues writing, the camera will zoom in to look at how the pen is acting on the paper. Second Scene: Here, the actor will take a highlighter to the generic pen and it will smudge everything up. This will be an extreme zoom. As the Pentel pens' inability to smudge and fast drying times are a huge part of their advertising, I wanted to include a shot that would compare Pentel pens to other pens. This will still be on the same desk as the first shot, but it will instead be an overhead shot truly focusing on the paper. Third Scene: It's well known how infuriating it can be to have a pen smudging up all your hard work, so I truly wanted to show that emotion here. The audience can empathize with our actor's struggle and want to help him find a better ...

Planning for my Pentel commercial

Before I start this big project, I got to work on planning out all the small details ahead of time so I wouldn't be rushing and freaking out trying to do it at the last minute. Here's the final plan I came up with! Props: Our main prop will be some Pentel Energel pens, as those are the focus of the commercial. We will also have a piece of paper and some notebooks to write on and in, along with whiteout tape. In other to compare the Pentel pen, we will also have an unbranded pen. Costumes: The actor will wear casual clothing, most likely a t-shirt and jeans. They will also have a backpack to convey they are a student, along with well-manicured and clean hands. If I can't find a left-handed actor, we will use a right-handed one. Another possibility is to have the actor wear glasses, but if I can't find either fake glasses or an actor with glasses, no glasses will suffice. Location list: The main location would be a library, specifically a study room. Here the opening sho...

Research blog: Commercial Conventions

I am creating a Pentel commercial. A common activity in these is someone writing, drawing, or erasing words.  Many of the things I saw were people writing and running their fingers over the ink immediately in order to show how quickly the pens dry, usually being accompanied by a left-handed person writing or text that emphasizes that the pens would be safe for left-handed people to use. I also saw a lot of comparisons between the drying times of Pentel pens and other leading pens side by side. Both pens would be used by the same person, write the same thing, and given the same time to dry, showing the audience what advantage they would get with using a Pentel pen. Props included papers, sticky notes, erasers, highlighters. Moreover, different styles of the pens were showcased, showing the wide variety of pens Pentel offers. Since we are only able to see the hand of a person writing, there aren't any clothes shown. However, all the hands look clean and well taken care of. More...
