Planning for my Pentel commercial

Before I start this big project, I got to work on planning out all the small details ahead of time so I wouldn't be rushing and freaking out trying to do it at the last minute. Here's the final plan I came up with!

Props:

Our main prop will be some Pentel Energel pens, as those are the focus of the commercial. We will also have a piece of paper and some notebooks to write on and in, along with whiteout tape. In other to compare the Pentel pen, we will also have an unbranded pen.

Costumes:

The actor will wear casual clothing, most likely a t-shirt and jeans. They will also have a backpack to convey they are a student, along with well-manicured and clean hands. If I can't find a left-handed actor, we will use a right-handed one. Another possibility is to have the actor wear glasses, but if I can't find either fake glasses or an actor with glasses, no glasses will suffice.

Location list:

The main location would be a library, specifically a study room. Here the opening shots will be filmed, with the actor getting frustrated at the unbranded pen. After the cut to the store for a different pen, the actor will return here to try out the new Pentel pen and continue working.

The second location will be at a stationery store, Office Depot, with the actor looking through all the different pens, trying to decide which one to buy.

Schedule:

On 10/22/2020, I researched the conventions and codes in stationary and pen commercials.

On 10/23/2020, I established the props, costumes, schedule, location list, and a backup plan.

On 10/28/2020, I will create the storyboard for the 30-second commercial.

On 11/01/2020, I will film the shots we will need for the commercial.

On 11/02/2020, I will edit and clean up the final project of the commercial.

Backup plan:

If I am not able to shoot at the library due to COVID-19 or not having permission to film there, I will film at my kitchen table or desk. The shot will stay the same. However, if I am unable to film at the store, I will switch the location to be of our actor looking through a bunch of pens in a box at my house. The scene will switch to the actor looking through the pen box and pulling out a Pentel one because of its interesting design, rather than a recommendation from a worker.

Whew! I'm getting more excited by the second now that I have a solid plan in place for my commercial. Can't wait!

Until next time, Danniella Miller signing off :)

Short Film Research: Tangles and Knots

Short film description:     A sticky, intimate bond between mother and daughter becomes threatened when the mother helps her teenage daughter throw a party to impress new, popular friends. Sound: In the dialogue, there is no difference in how the mother and daughter speak to each other, speaking more like friends than mother and daughter. However, when the party starts, the mom begins interjecting herself into the daughter's conversations, teaching her how to take a jello shot and encouraging her to come into the pool. The added sound contributes to the setting, with dance music that helps bring the idea of it being a party altogether. This is made apparent when there is no dialogue and the daughter is just dancing, where all that can be heard is the music she's dancing to. There is no dialogue that needs to be understood or listened to, more so the viewer can focus on the daughter's awkward movements and how she feels in that moment. Mis-en-scene: The opening scenes work a...

Title Research: Lady Bird

What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? This title sequence actually starts with the title of the movie and is a bit of a way into the movie. Instead of being at the very beginning like some of the other movies I've watched in this genre, this title sequence is at the end of the opening minutes. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? There is lots of imagery of church and the catholic school Lady Bird attends. There is lots of religious imagery and actions. There are many shots of Lady Bird's peers and then similar shots of Lady Bird doing something different or wrong.  What connotations do these images carry? These images are quite strict and heavy. Every image is showing a practice that must be done a certain way. If done incorrectly, even by accident, it could be grounds for getting in trouble, especially at a catholic school. Most of the focus is on Lady Bird, who seems to march by the beat of her own drum. Her not participating in some of th...

Editing together

Today was the first day of straight editing. Because of the size of the file, it was really hard for us to share the videos to get editing started. We tried sharing it through our phones, but even with just a couple of videos, our storage got full. Through email, the videos wouldn't send. It was hard for us to share the SD cards, especially for me. I was using my dad's camera and SD card, and he uses them often for his own personal projects. Along with that, he had a lot of important information on the SD card, that could've easily been lost or accidentally deleted. A storage service ended up being the best idea for us, and we all already had google accounts, We came up with the solution of using Google Drive just to share the file, and once everyone had downloaded a copy of the video, we would delete it off the drive. This made it so everyone could get a look at the videos think about what we wanted to do with them and understand the progress of the film. As we've loo...
