Filming is Done!

This past week was spring break for me. Because of that, I got a nice long week to work on my project and film with my brother. We spent two whole days filming together during spring break. Since we were filming at a train station, we saw quite a few interesting characters. Probably the stand-out person we met was a couple trying to find directions to the Hard Rock Casino. The guy was a recent immigrant from Puerto Rico, who had no idea how to use his phone. The girl was from Tampa, Florida, had no money or identification on her, and was convinced I was her long-lost friend's daughter's cousin's something. If I'm going to be completely honest, I had no idea how either of them had made it to the train station already, but I and my brother called them a taxi and sent them on their way. Hopefully, they found it alright. It was a lot of fun filming with my brother as well. It barely even felt like we were working. I really wish that COVID-19 was less of an issue. I think it...

Filming on my Own

Since both my mom and my brother were unavailable, I had to spend some time filming alone this weekend. Since my dad is quite into photography, I have a lot of technology I can use to help facilitate the filming process. I used his tripod in order to help me while I filmed alone. My biggest issue was that the shots felt very stagnant. I'm going to be filming more this weekend, so I will get a chance to continue experimenting with the shots. I originally wanted the camera to follow me as I walked. However, I think it's coming out good so far. More than anything, I have the resources to redo any shots I need to. I would prefer to get as much done on my own so I don't have to depend on my mom and my brother's schedules. Whenever I do get a chance to film with them, I know my time will be limited. I want to optimize our time so that no time is being wasted. I would rather work with my family on shots I absolutely cannot get alone rather than working on things I could possi...

The Start of Filming

Over the weekend, I got a chance to film with my brother. We got about half of the scenes done, albeit not in order. The first scene I chose to shot was the one where my brother bumps into me, creating a bit of conflict near the end of the opening sequence. In order to get it how I wanted, I had the help of a tripod and my mom helping us film. We had to do a couple takes, but it ended up perfect. The main reason we had to keep redoing it was because I wanted my brother to bump into me as close to the middle of the shot as possible. Moreover, seeing the shot actually being made and instead of just being ideas and drawings on paper changed my ideas and the way I wanted the shot to look. Also, while I waited for my brother to be able to film, I created a big list of everything I needed to get done and plan out. This helped me visualize my time better from now until April 16th. I feel like I have a new vision and drive to get this done. I have a lot of newfound excitement to get this ...

Learning Editing

One of the biggest issues I believe I'm going to encounter in my final task is the editing process. While I am unable to film, I've taken the time to start studying and watching youtube videos in order to help me understand my editing program better. I use Adobe Premiere Pro, and before this year I had only used Final Cut Pro. It was a big transition moving from Final Cut to Premiere, but I do think my work has benefited from it. Since I am both new to my editing software and the techniques I hope to use in this film, I've been taking the time to learn from others. I was able to film the first shots of the train itself, so I've been playing around with editing it and thinking of things I could do for the rest of my film. Probably my biggest inspiration for editing in this opening sequence is Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. Much of the editing in that movie is based on video games. I have just watched it again recently, and it helped me understand some of the things I can d...

Production starts!

Now that I have everything planned out, it's time to get to work. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get to filming just yet. My brother, who is helping me film, has to go in person to work. He's been nonstop working for quite some time. Because of this, we plan to get to filming over the weekend, where he'll be free for the first time. In the meantime, I get small opportunities to talk to him, so I use that time to explain what's going on and what we will do in filming. The most important scenes I need are the ones with him in them. The rest I will work to get on my own or with the help of my mom if my brother is unable to help. I have broken down each scene as small and as simple as possible in order to best explain it to my mom and my brother. I'm a bit scared because I have a specific idea of the angles and compositions I want, but conveying it to others is still quite hard for me. It's something I've struggled with quite a bit. I've had to u...

Planning Blog: everything else!

The main thing I want to talk about and plan out is the health and safety precautions I will be taking in the filming of my final task. Everyone involved in this project is living in the same house. Everyone except me is also fully vaccinated, which I am very thankful for. My mom, who is helping me film, is working from home and only goes out if absolutely necessary. My brother, who will be acting in the film, only goes out to work. We have done everything in our power to ensure we are staying safe and COVID free. I will be filming in three locations. The first one is the Broward Train Station, where the first 2-3 scenes will be shot. The majority of the film will be done in the parking lot of the Train Station and Bus Station. Finally, I will be filming around and in my house.  These locations are all fairly close to me, so if needed I can walk around and get several shots or different takes if needed. As for the schedule, this is what I have so far: March 1-5: planning out,...

Planning Blog: Storyboard

Here is the storyboard for my opening sequence. It still might be subject to change, but it gives the general idea of what my opening sequence will look like. Making this storyboard helped me visualize the many ideas I had in my head for my opening sequence. I am very happy with the results, and I hope to be able to execute all of these ideas properly.  Until next time, Danniella Miller signing off. :)
