Group Blog

Hey guys!

So, I managed to find a group to work with. I'm working with Angel Noreiga and Anya Lucas. They're both in my class period and grade, so we have time to talk to each other in class every day. Angel and I worked on previous assignments together, such as my commercial. I know Angel has a drive to make sure every shot is perfect. He has more experience with a camera than Anya and I combined. We chose to include Anya into our group in order to distribute the work more evenly and her editing abilities. As we're all juniors, we're all struggling to manage our school work. We're all taking AP tests and currently studying for the SAT. Because of that, we wanted to make sure the work was all as evenly distributed as possible. In terms of what I'm doing in this group, my artistic ability and equipment will be used to do storyboarding and editing/filming. Thanks to my dad being a photophile, I have a really nice Canon T6i Rebel that can be used for filming, in addition to our phones. My dad also has Adobe Premiere Pro, which we can use for editing. I'm honestly a little scared and apprehensive about working in a group. I've never done a project of this size, much less with two other people. What I'm most scared for is how we will communicate. With all of us being so busy, we're using class time to try and "carve out" some space from our schedule. I think I'm also going to find it hard to balance everyone's emotions. I tend to be a people pleaser, and when it comes to making a decision, I seem to back out instead of going with what I believe in. I'm hoping working in a group can help me learn to stand up for myself and my ideas while keeping me humble enough to be able to work with my groupmates effectively.

Until next time,
Danniella Miller

Short Film Research: Tangles and Knots

Short film description:     A sticky, intimate bond between mother and daughter becomes threatened when the mother helps her teenage daughter throw a party to impress new, popular friends. Sound: In the dialogue, there is no difference in how the mother and daughter speak to each other, speaking more like friends than mother and daughter. However, when the party starts, the mom begins interjecting herself into the daughter's conversations, teaching her how to take a jello shot and encouraging her to come into the pool. The added sound contributes to the setting, with dance music that helps bring the idea of it being a party altogether. This is made apparent when there is no dialogue and the daughter is just dancing, where all that can be heard is the music she's dancing to. There is no dialogue that needs to be understood or listened to, more so the viewer can focus on the daughter's awkward movements and how she feels in that moment. Mis-en-scene: The opening scenes work a...

Title Research: Lady Bird

What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? This title sequence actually starts with the title of the movie and is a bit of a way into the movie. Instead of being at the very beginning like some of the other movies I've watched in this genre, this title sequence is at the end of the opening minutes. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? There is lots of imagery of church and the catholic school Lady Bird attends. There is lots of religious imagery and actions. There are many shots of Lady Bird's peers and then similar shots of Lady Bird doing something different or wrong.  What connotations do these images carry? These images are quite strict and heavy. Every image is showing a practice that must be done a certain way. If done incorrectly, even by accident, it could be grounds for getting in trouble, especially at a catholic school. Most of the focus is on Lady Bird, who seems to march by the beat of her own drum. Her not participating in some of th...

Editing together

Today was the first day of straight editing. Because of the size of the file, it was really hard for us to share the videos to get editing started. We tried sharing it through our phones, but even with just a couple of videos, our storage got full. Through email, the videos wouldn't send. It was hard for us to share the SD cards, especially for me. I was using my dad's camera and SD card, and he uses them often for his own personal projects. Along with that, he had a lot of important information on the SD card, that could've easily been lost or accidentally deleted. A storage service ended up being the best idea for us, and we all already had google accounts, We came up with the solution of using Google Drive just to share the file, and once everyone had downloaded a copy of the video, we would delete it off the drive. This made it so everyone could get a look at the videos think about what we wanted to do with them and understand the progress of the film. As we've loo...
