Research ideas for Genre

Our main pitch is: A person struggling with bills and family and loses their life to gambling. This is the pitch we plan on working with. Of all the genres, we decided to focus our studies on drama, thriller, and action. All of these felt like they could work really well with our pitch. We mostly choose these three because we were most familiar with them. Anya has worked with action and drama, while Danniella and I have worked and studied thriller. I’ll now go into detail about these genres and our thoughts on them.

Choosing action is probably our least likely choice. It would be a lot of work in both getting and properly expressing high-adrenaline shots. Moreover, with only five minutes to work with, the action could end up feeling rushed and unnecessary. Choosing action could only benefit us since Anya has experience in it and could really act as a back-up. It works well with our pitch because the idea of struggling and drama can show high paced physical scenes where a character may be angered with something that took place, affecting the final outcome.

Our pitch surrounds a generally dark story, but not enough to go into horror. The pitch is suspenseful and scary, but not to the extent a psychological horror would be. Because of this, we wanted to look into the thriller genre. Thriller is usually very dark and intense, focusing on twists and dark lighting to engage our audience. Gambling in it of itself does just that, so we would be able to lean into that aspect of the pitch more. Thriller also offers a better chance to explore a different route if we ever wanted to move closer to horror.

Finally, we have the drama genre. Drama is our most likely choice for this pitch. Drama is broad enough to cover family and economical struggles, while still allowing for all the action, suspense, and ideas that would be explored through this pitch.. Adding the gambling behind it creates a cause and effect that can carry the movie through the simple formula: rise, climax, and fall. Choosing drama, we can also explore other factors of the pitch, such as how the main character’s family is structured and the familial issues at play. More than likely though we’ll be focusing on what’s up front. An economical struggle from gambling that leaves a family broken truly screams drama.

See you next time,

Short Film Research: Tangles and Knots

Short film description:     A sticky, intimate bond between mother and daughter becomes threatened when the mother helps her teenage daughter throw a party to impress new, popular friends. Sound: In the dialogue, there is no difference in how the mother and daughter speak to each other, speaking more like friends than mother and daughter. However, when the party starts, the mom begins interjecting herself into the daughter's conversations, teaching her how to take a jello shot and encouraging her to come into the pool. The added sound contributes to the setting, with dance music that helps bring the idea of it being a party altogether. This is made apparent when there is no dialogue and the daughter is just dancing, where all that can be heard is the music she's dancing to. There is no dialogue that needs to be understood or listened to, more so the viewer can focus on the daughter's awkward movements and how she feels in that moment. Mis-en-scene: The opening scenes work a...

Title Research: Lady Bird

What titles are displayed during the opening sequences? This title sequence actually starts with the title of the movie and is a bit of a way into the movie. Instead of being at the very beginning like some of the other movies I've watched in this genre, this title sequence is at the end of the opening minutes. What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? There is lots of imagery of church and the catholic school Lady Bird attends. There is lots of religious imagery and actions. There are many shots of Lady Bird's peers and then similar shots of Lady Bird doing something different or wrong.  What connotations do these images carry? These images are quite strict and heavy. Every image is showing a practice that must be done a certain way. If done incorrectly, even by accident, it could be grounds for getting in trouble, especially at a catholic school. Most of the focus is on Lady Bird, who seems to march by the beat of her own drum. Her not participating in some of th...

Editing together

Today was the first day of straight editing. Because of the size of the file, it was really hard for us to share the videos to get editing started. We tried sharing it through our phones, but even with just a couple of videos, our storage got full. Through email, the videos wouldn't send. It was hard for us to share the SD cards, especially for me. I was using my dad's camera and SD card, and he uses them often for his own personal projects. Along with that, he had a lot of important information on the SD card, that could've easily been lost or accidentally deleted. A storage service ended up being the best idea for us, and we all already had google accounts, We came up with the solution of using Google Drive just to share the file, and once everyone had downloaded a copy of the video, we would delete it off the drive. This made it so everyone could get a look at the videos think about what we wanted to do with them and understand the progress of the film. As we've loo...
